Trapped in Zone One is partnership with Vallance Community Sports Association is hosting the Good for Girls programme in Tower Hamlets with London Youth, supporting young women to access relevant, holistic early intervention of mental health support. This programme will also offer skills and tools to maintain positive mental health with young women getting support earlier, meaning fewer will require referral to specialist services.

The Good for Girls programme will help to create a mental health hub with us and extend the support for young women outside of school, with trained youth professionals who are able to create safe spaces where young women feel able to talk about their mental health and learn tools to manage their wellbeing.

Our programme will run from March to September 2021 providing weekly creative/yoga fitness provision, supporting young women aged 10-14, promoting positive mental health and challenge stigma.

They will:

  • access free activities that promotes wellbeing

  • discuss emotional wellbeing and issues they care about

  • take leadership to promote wellbeing in their communities.

Good for Girls programme also includes a outing on 10 July 2021, where a small number of young women will take part in activities that help them become ‘Wellbeing Ambassadors’ for our organisation. These ambassadors will lead a social action project on 27 August 2021 to promote positive mental health and wellbeing at 117 Vallance Road, E1 5BW.

Through consultations with youth workers and young people, there is a clear need to have safe spaces to talk about mental health. When asked what kind of support they would like, young people mentioned “group sessions where people tell me I am not alone” and “having a safe space to talk to youth workers”. Good for Girls therefore uses a concept called ‘Talking Circles’ where the youth workers are trained to facilitate discussions around emotional wellbeing with the young women in a safe, non-judgemental space.

With 75% of mental health problems becoming established by age 24, it’s vital to support young people at an early age. All too often, access to mental health support is limited.
