We aligned our summer programme with Skills Builder Partnership which is a global movement of employers, educators, and impact organisations working together to ensure that one day, everyone builds the essential skills to succeed.
Essential skills unlock learning in the classroom, boosting academic outcomes, perseverance, and self-belief. They halve the likelihood of being out of work and increase earnings across a lifetime. They even boost wellbeing and life satisfaction.
These skills underpin an individual’s success at each stage in life and support all young people in developing their independence. We will focus on four essential skills day during our summer programme:
Speaking - The oral transmission of information or ideas.
Listening - The receiving, retaining and processing of information or ideas.
Teamwork - Working cooperatively with others towards achieving a shared goal.
Creativity - The use of imagination and the generation of new ideas.
We collated feedback from activities with Reflection Sessions.
What is Arts Award?
Support young people to grow their creativity and gain 21st century skills
Arts Award takes children and young people on a creative journey, exploring the arts world, discovering their potential as artists, developing leadership skills – and gaining a recognised qualification along the way. Open to anyone aged 25 or under, this unique set of arts qualifications builds skills essential for success in the 21st century: Creativity and communication, along with problem-solving, reflective-thinking and confidence.
Young people can achieve Arts Award in any art form, through the five levels – Discover, Explore, Bronze, Silver and Gold – young people:
Enjoy creating and participating in arts activities.
Through Arts Award, young people get actively involved in creative activities and produce their own art work . Those working towards the higher levels collaborate with artists to try a genre or art form new to them too.
Experience arts events and explore the work of artists.
Arts Award connects young people with the arts world – as the audience or visitor, behind the scenes, learning from creative professionals, or researching the work of artists and arts organisations. At higher levels, participants review and share their experiences, gaining critical-thinking and organisational skills.
Part of Shaping Creative Futures
Exploring how youth work and the arts can come together to support young people’s creativity.
Shaping Creative Futures is an action research project by London Youth (LY) and Arts Council England. It looks at how youth and arts organisations can work together to give young people in London better access to creative opportunities – especially those who find it hard to get involved in traditional arts and culture.
Shaping Creative Futures: Research
In the first phase, Shaping Creative Futures: Research, LY explored how youth and arts organisations currently engage young people in creative activity and identified the barriers that prevent collaboration. LY worked with youth workers, artists, and sector leaders to map challenges, collect insights, and begin shaping ideas for what better partnership could look like across London. LY did this through surveys and data analysis, roundtables with youth practitioners and cultural partners and consultations with young people.
Shaping Creative Futures: Development
In the second phase, and building on this learning, the Development phase brought together a group of youth practitioners from London Youth member organisations to share experiences, co-design ideas, and test approaches that could strengthen collaboration between youth and cultural organisations.
Over six months, the Development Group explored how creativity can support young people’s wellbeing, expression, and personal development, while identifying practical ways to improve access, build confidence, and strengthen cross-sector partnerships.
London Youth focused on:
Exploring how the creative youth sector might make use of ‘third spaces’
Sharing creative youth practice with The Warren Youth Project in Hull (NPO youth club)
Investigating the pros and cons of universal offers vs. tailored interventions
Introducing Shaping Creative Futures: Piloting Practice
And now, moving into the third phase, Shaping Creative Futures: Piloting Practice, where youth and cultural organisations work in partnership to deliver creative activities with young people and pilot new ways of working together.
For this phase, youth organisations and cultural partners will form partnerships to:
Co-deliver creative programmes for young people.
Contribute to one of three working groups focused on Access & Progression, Space & Community Assets, or Youth Sector Skills in Commissioning.
Join the Youth Arts Network for London, a new community of practice to develop frameworks, tools, and shared methodologies that support long-term collaboration between the youth and cultural sectors.
